At The Eyelash Emporium we firmly believe that a patch test during consultation of your eyelash extension client is imperative to ensure a professional semi permanent eyelash service. In this section, we’ll try to demonstrate why by answering some frequently asked questions about the eyelash extension patch test. Although reactions to eyelash extension glue are very rare, in our experience 95% of these instances can be avoided with a simple precautionary patch test, prior to application of semi permanent eyelashes.

Why conduct a patch test prior to applying semi permanent eyelashes?

By conducting a patch test you are protecting both your client (safety wise) and yourself (from costly litigation!) if you have provided a patch test prior to eyelash extension treatment. The patch test is designed to ensure that your client is not sensitive to eyelash extension glue vapours.

Where should a patch test be applied for eyelash extensions?

We advise our students to use two separate types of eyelash extension glue during the patch test, to apply just three eyelash extensions at the outer corners of each eye. Most good brands will have a lower vapour glue (e.g. ‘Sensitive Glue’) and a stronger eyelash extension glue (e.g. ‘Ultra Glue’). If you adopt this method and the client has reacted to the stronger glue, but not the sensitive glue you may still be able to apply eyelash extensions to your client (at your own professional discretion, of course). We would also advise checking the terms of your insurance agreement with your provider.

Should I charge for patch tests?

This is entirely up to the salon owner/beauty therapist’s discretion. We find most salons don’t charge for patch tests and consultations. However, if you are particularly busy it is understandable if you do charge your client a small amount. If you’re a mobile eyelash extension technician it isn’t unusual to charge for an initial consultation and patch test, as you are required to travel and it isn’t unreasonable to expect your travel expenses (mileage, etc.) to be covered.

How long does a patch test take?

5 minutes - that's it!
